It has all of the trials, all of the tribulations, and all of the feels. The backgrounds, differences and commonalities of Brooklyn and Eden make for a very meaty and juicy story all on its own. With all of this MMA speak, I can honestly say that you will enjoy this story without knowing anything about fighting. The twist ending had me enthralled and truly curious about an aspect of MMA that I've never thought about before. She wants just one thing: to win the Featherweight belt to bring honor to her family. She is coached and mentored by her homophobic, strict father and 3 adoring, but no-holds punches brothers. Brooklyn operates with the reputation as a hot-head, a brute, and a brawler. The other is a young woman who has made a name for herself in the sport and is undefeated. Eden is a meditating zen who teaches do jong, and tries to operate from a place of serenity. Eden and Brooklyn are perfect MCs, One is an experienced fighter who has been navigating MMA for years and is the youngest woman ever to win the Featherweight Championship, and still holds the belt four years later. If you're a fan, you know who they are! The story is a unique combination of fiction and non-fiction that lets the reader into the mysterious world of MMA. As a fan of UFC and MMA, I really liked having Dana White and Joe Rogan as characters in the story (minor characters, but they are there, and it's great!).

As Leslie says: “Knowledge makes you smarter. Chess seems like a game of pure abstract reasoning, but being good at it depends on knowledge. With this enthralling manifesto on the power of curiosity, Ian Leslie has written a book that displays all the key characteristics of its subject matter: an inquisitive, open-minded, and ultimately deeply rewarding exploration of the human minds appetite for new ideas. Beginning with the hippo soup eaten in Africa in 6000 BC, through to the dangerous blowfish enjoyed in contemporary Japan, A Curious History of Food and Drink reveals the bizarre origins of the food and drink consumed throughout history. They can “see” most of the board without having to memorise each piece and its place. Grandmasters and experienced players did much better than novices – because they have thousands of positions and kinds of positions stored in their memories already. Show people a chess board, with the pieces arranged as if a game is under way, and then ask them to replace the pieces from memory. He takes on the absurd idea that schools should teach “thinking skills” instead of “knowledge”, and illustrates it with a great experiment carried out in 1946. Sometimes in the book, Leslie talks such good sense that he makes you realise what an idiot you have been all these years. It's an ironic point of view coming from a bachelor who lived with his mother for most of his life - a woman who cooked his dinner every night. When economist and philosopher Adam Smith proclaimed that all our actions were motivated by self-interest, he used the example of the baker and the butcher as he laid the foundations for 'economic man.' He argued that the baker and butcher didn't give bread and meat out of the goodness of their hearts. How do you get your dinner? That is the basic question of economics. A funny, clever, and thought-provoking examination of the myth of the "economic man" and its impact on the global economy.
